It's World Doula week!
Kicking off on World Doula Day, the goal of World Doula Week is to showcase the impact that birth and postpartum doulas have on the physiological, social, emotional, and psychological health of women, newborns and families in the postpartum period. That's an awful lot of words to say doulas rock and we should talk about it.
Doulas are non-medical professionals who provide informational, educational and physical support during pregnancy, labor & birth and for the first 12 weeks of the postpartum period.
Blah, blah, blah.
Doulas are magical birth besties who answer your questions and help you keep from freaking out. We make sure you are drinking your water and that you feel taken care of. WAY better than solely relying on advice from Facebook Mommy groups - sometimes those ladies are crazy.
SOME of the doula support goodness includes:
Reduces the incidence of c-sections
May shorten the length of labor
Reduces epidural and analgesic requests
Increases breastfeeding initiation and continuation
Increases mother’s satisfaction of birth experience
Can reduce the incidence of postpartum mood disorders
Increases new parents’ confidence in the care of their newborn
Sounds great, right? I think some people imagine that doulas are going to wave crystals above you at the full moon while whispering incantations from the birth goddess in your ear. If that's your jam, I *know* her. She's warm and wonderful and I can hook you up. Me? That's not my vibe. I want you to feel comfortable and confident in whatever path your birth takes.
Will I help you through an unmedicated birth? 100%
But what if you want an epidural? Cool.
Doulas don't support cesareans though, right? Wrong! Friend, I am there for help before, during (if permitted in the OR), and after.
How about if you feel good about birth but are iffy about bringing home the baby? I'm there for you! Some people* call me the "Baby Master" and I frequently receive offers to move in with my postpartum families. Who DOESN'T want zn extra pair of hands sometimes?
*the people are my son's 12 year old friends, but I still think it counts.
Your birth is YOUR story.
